Why we created the bags? We created these as a result of watching the ban on single use plastic turn into a multi-use plastic disaster. As we searched for a reusable, biodegradable bag that worked in the supermarkets, wasn’t too big so that the shopping didn’t become too heavy but would still fold up & fit a few of them in the handbag so that they didn’t get left in the car, we weren’t finding an answer. Especially when we wanted it to be at a price that made it affordable to make all our bags biodegradable. The only biodegradable bags at the supermarket were hemp ones & although they were sustainable, they didn’t fit in the handbag so they weren’t necessarily with us when we just ducked into the supermarket. We found one bag claiming to be “EcoSilk” but it turned out to be nylon – More Plastic!
We couldn’t find the solution – so we tracked down the materials ourselves and had them made. Not only is the bag made of 50% silk & 50% cotton, the tag is rubber & the care label is made of cotton. Both of these come from plants and are boidegradable. The rubber tag will actually biodegrade first if it isn't used.
What does it mean when we say it is 'Biodegradable' well we mean that it will break down in the soil or in salt water in 3 months. This is safe for the environment and does not contain toxins. Our bags even have a cotton care label & actual rubber for the tag so that nothing will remain when composted. They won't harm ocean animals if they somehow eat them as being cotton and silk they are able to break down. Silk, is protein based and breaks down, as does cotton.
One of the great side effects of silk - we planned for the bags to hold as much as the original plastic shopping bags but silk stretches, so you can actually fit about 3 times as much as the old ones, without breaking & they shrink back down to the size of the Woollies polyester (yes, that is plastic) bags.
